Toimi Teelahti

Toimi represents our clients directly before the US Patent Office, the European Patent Office as well as the Finnish Patent Office (PRH).  Toimi also drafts patent applications for inventions within his field of technical expertise.

Toimi joined Laine in 2016 and has previously worked as an ICT startup founder.  Bilingual in Finnish and English, Toimi holds a MSc (Eng) degree in automation technology.

A board member since 2022, he is the current Chairman of the Board.

Benjamin Finley

Benjamin joined Laine IP in January 2025. He works as a patent agent in Laine IP’s U.S. IP team, focusing primarily on inventions in the telecommunications and computer-related fields.

Previously, Benjamin served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Helsinki Department of Computer Science, working on topics including mobile networking, AI, and augmented reality. Additionally, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Aalto University Department of Communications and Networking, working on topics including mobile device usage and quality of experience (QoE).

Benjamin holds a D.Sc. degree in Network Economics and a M.Sc. degree in Communication Ecosystems from Aalto University, and a B.Sc. degree in Software Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).

In his leisure time Benjamin plays disc golf, and he also enjoys watching independent movies and following world news.

Niki Ulmanen

Niki joined Laine IP in March 2025. He works in the ICTM team, where his tasks include producing various analyses and reports, drafting patent applications and responding to office actions.

Before changing his career to IPR and patents in autumn 2022 Niki worked as an IT consultant. He is specialized in system integrations with focus on scripting and requirement gathering. He also has experience in a vast area pertaining to different steps of patent prosecution. He is experienced in novelty and patentability studies, competitor analyses, freedom-to-operate reports, patent landscape analyses, invalidation studies and Niki has also helped in patent litigation by searching for prior art and forming attacks against the opposition’s patent.  Additionally, Niki has also regularly written responses to office actions for EPO and PRH, and also drafted instructions to overseas patent attorneys to Australia, Japan and the US.

Niki holds a MSc degree (Complex Systems) from Aalto University.

In his free time Niki usually heads to the gym for some weightlifting. Besides weightlifting his dog keeps him active with daily walks. Niki also enjoys baking and specialize in laminated dough from which he bakes croissants and other viennoiserie.

Adam Herrala Bricker

Adam joined Laine IP’s US team in August 2024, having previously worked as an academic researcher specializing in the intersection of epistemology and social neuroscience. His areas of focus include physics, ICT, and neuroscience.

Adam holds the title of dosentti from the University of Oulu and earned his PhD from the University of Edinburgh (both in philosophy). He has held postdoctoral fellowships as the University of Turku, University of Cologne, and University of Oulu. Adam also holds degrees in human neuroscience (MSc, University of Turku) and physics (BS, Michigan State University).

In his free time, Adam enjoys spending time with his family, making music, and developing software.

Joni Vehmas

Joni started his work at Laine IP in March 2023. He works as a European patent attorney in the ICT & Mechanics team, specializing especially in ICT inventions.

Before joining Laine IP, Joni worked as a patent attorney in another IPR firm for over six years. During this time, he qualified as both a Finnish patent attorney and a European patent attorney. The prestigious Managing IP publication awarded Joni with the MIP Rising Star recognition in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Before transitioning to patenting, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University, studying the propagation of radio waves in various urban indoor and outdoor environments to support the development of 5G systems.

Joni has graduated from Aalto University and holds a Master of Science (Tech) degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, majoring in radio engineering and minoring in electromagnetics in 2011. Furthermore, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of radio engineering at Aalto University in 2015. His doctoral dissertation concerned artificial electromagnetic composite materials (so-called metamaterials) and their utilization in radio engineering applications (e.g. in antennas, cloaking devices and microwave lenses).

Joni has extensive experience in protecting various ICT/electrical engineering-related inventions both in Finland and abroad (e.g. in Europe, the USA and China). The inventions that he has worked on have related, for example, to ICT, software, artificial intelligence, optics, radio engineering and electronics. He is especially versed in patenting of computer-implemented inventions. In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Joni has experience in conducting various novelty, freedom-to-operate and patent landscape searches for clients as well as in competitor monitoring.

Teemu Tuomainen

Teemu works in the ICT & mechanics team as an authorized Finnish patent attorney. He started at Laine in 2023.

Before joining Laine, Teemu has worked in various research positions at the University of Eastern Finland investigating, for example, quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and its applications as well as electrochemical methods for salivary diagnostics.

Teemu holds an M.Sc. in Applied Physics / Medical Physics.

Terhi Nykänen

Terhi started in Laine IP’s ICT & mechanics team in February 2021. Terhi is responsible for preparing and processing patent applications, defending and challenging patents, IPR research and investigations related to inventions, patents and their utilisation.

Terhi holds a MSc in Physics.

Terhi is an experienced European Patent Attorney. Before Laine, she worked in another patent office and in the mobile phone industry, e.g. as a team leader and Senior IPR Specialist. Terhi knows the ropes to processing and protecting inventions, risk management and patent defense, as well as analysis to support negotiations.

Terhi is a member in PIRY, STY and epi.

Mark W. Scott

Mark moved to Finland from the US to join Laine IP in 2019. He is the Team Leader of the US IP Team and a Partner of the firm, and additionally works as a US Patent Attorney on the firm’s chemistry team.

As a US Patent Attorney, Mark is uniquely able to offer patentability, validity, enforceability, and freedom to operate analyses and written opinions to the firm’s clients when they involve US patent assets.

Prior to joining Laine IP, Mark served as outside counsel to and in-house counsel for Siemens’ organizations for over 11 years, where he managed global IP strategy and prosecution for one of its business units. Prior to working with Siemens, Mark practiced in Chicago and Denver, passionately assisting clients in the acquisition and protection of their intellectual property rights.

Mark holds degrees in Forensic Science and Chemistry, and a Juris Doctor of Law from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

In his spare time, Mr. Scott enjoys art, film, studying languages, sports, working out, travel, and spending time with his family, including his young daughter. In addition, Mr. Scott is a local DJ who plays in cocktail lounges and terraces in the Helsinki area under the name DJ Patent.

Jari Nieminen

Jari joined Laine IP in 2018. He works as European Patent Attorney on the ICT & mechanics team. He is also the Deputy Managing Director of Laine IP.

Previously, Jari worked as a researcher at Aalto University and as a patent engineer in the mobile phone industry. He has over five years of research experience in wireless communications, with a particular focus on sensor networks and signal processing. Additionally, he worked as patent engineer for nearly six years, with a job description that included handling new inventions, managing a global patent portfolio, and carrying out infringement analysis. In addition to these tasks, Jari also supported the licensing of patents by evaluating the scope of granted patents.

Jari is experienced in collaborating with inventors in discovering and protecting new inventions around the world, especially in Europe and the USA. His research background provides a strong basis for understanding inventors and helping them formulate their inventions. As a qualified European patent attorney, Jari has wide experience in drafting patent applications and responses. He can also assist in infringement analyses by evaluating the scope of protection of granted patents and by providing substantiation of infringement.

Jari holds a Doctor of Science (Tech) degree in communications engineering.

Jouni Smolander

Jouni joined Laine IP in 2016 as European Patent Attorney on the ICT & mechanics team. He helps his clients to turn ideas into valuable, protected assets — combining deep technical insight with a sharp understanding of business goals. With over 25 years in patents, both in private practice and industry, he counsels clients from early-stage concepts to robust IPR portfolios that deliver real business impact. On May 1, 2022 he became Laine IP´s Managing Director.

Jouni holds a MSc degree in electrical engineering. He is a member of SPAY, FICPI, EPI and and The Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights.
