Toimi represents our clients directly before the US Patent Office, the European Patent Office as well as the Finnish Patent Office (PRH). Toimi also drafts patent applications for inventions within his field of technical expertise.
Toimi joined Laine in 2016 and has previously worked as an ICT startup founder. Bilingual in Finnish and English, Toimi holds a MSc (Eng) degree in automation technology.
A board member since 2022, he is the current Chairman of the Board.
Jari joined Laine’s chemistry team in December 2024, where he works as a European Patent Attorney. Jari has experience in various fields of technology (e.g., nucleic acid chemistry, peptide chemistry, labeling technology, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, process chemistry, optics, mechanics, nanotechnology, ultrasonics, and sensor technology). He also handles opposition matters, acts as an expert in various infringement and invalidation court cases, conducts novelty searches and freedom-to-operate analyses, and develops patenting strategies in collaboration with clients.
Jari has been working in the patent field since 2009 as a patent attorney and European Patent Attorney at Finnpatent Oy, and prior to that as a researcher and Head of the Organic Chemistry R&D Department in an international company. He also has extensive academic experience: he holds adjunct professorships (docentships) at the Universities of Helsinki and Turku and has over 10 years of experience in academic research (University of Turku, Turku Centre for Biotechnology, Uppsala University, Wake Forest University). Additionally, he is an inventor or co-inventor in 21 patent families in the field of chemistry and seven utility model families, and he has published numerous scientific articles.
Jari holds a Master of Science degree in physical chemistry and a PhD in synthetic nucleic acid chemistry. In 2014–2015, he completed the CEIPI epi Course on European Patent Litigation at the University of Strasbourg, which qualifies him to represent clients before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Furthermore, he has enhanced his knowledge of the UPC by completing the CEIPI Training Program for Technically Qualified Judges of the Unified Patent Court at the University of Strasbourg in 2016.
Maria joined Laine IP in November 2023. She works as a patent attorney on the chemistry team, and she has experience related to patent application process in Finland and abroad, utility models, supplementary protection certificates for medicinal products, and analyses based on patent information, such as novelty searches and patent landscapes.
She holds a holds a MSc (chemistry) degree from the University of Helsinki.
Maria is also a member of board in Finska Kemistsamfundet.
Gustav works as a European patent attorney and team leader in Laine IP’s chemistry team. He handles assignments primarly related to chemistry and biotechnology, with a particular focus on organic and medicinal chemistry.
Gustav has been working in the IPR sector since 2017. Prior to that, he worked as a researcher for about 15 years, including as a Team leader and Responsible investigator at the Drug Discovery-group of the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Helsinki. He has also worked in South Korea at Seoul National University. In addition, Gustav has supervised several PhD students, he has been a member of several PhD committees and he has been a reviewer of reseach applications to the European Research Council, among others. Both the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and the University of Helsinki awarded Gustav the Young Researcher’s Award in 2016.
Gustav holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry (University of Helsinki and York University (UK).
Gustav is also actively involved in association activities. He is, for example, a Finnish deputy member of epi (term 2023-2026), a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys (SPAY), the Finnish Chemical Society, and the Finska Kemistsamfundet – Suomen Kemistiseura (FKS) (Chemical Society of Finland).
In his spare time, Gustav enjoys playing golf – give him a call if you’d like to play. He also likes to exercise, for example by going to the gym and running. He has played actively football, floorball and volleyball. He also enjoys spending his free time with his family and his friends.
Torsti joined Laine IP in April 2024. He works in the ICT & mechanics team as a European Patent Attorney, working with patent applications related to electrical engineering.
Before starting his career in IPR Torsti has worked as an electric designer at Etteplan Oyj, focusing in various projects related to embedded systems (particularly systems with FPGAs). He has prior work experience also as a software designer and as a schematics/layout designer.
Additionally, Torsti has experience in patenting inventions in the field of power electronics, especially frequency converters, converter topologies and converter control algorithms. Further experience in health technologies (incl. monitoring sleep and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease). He has drafted and prosecuted patent applications in a large variety of technologies (such as cryptographic systems, insect farming and plant cultivation, robotics, and lasers).
Torsti holds a MSc degree (electrical engineering) from Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT).
Juha-Matti works as European Patent Attorney on Laine IP Oy’s chemistry team, where he is responsible for patents in biotechnology and chemistry. He is highly experienced in patent prosecution, with strong IPR expertise especially in genetic engineering, cellular and microbiology, and biotechnology. He has also successfully prosecuted patents for mechanical inventions.
Juha-Matti has worked at Laine IP since 2015. Prior to joining the company, he worked as Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney at Oy Jalo Ant-Wuorinen Ab, and as a researcher with the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki.
Juha-Matti holds a MSc degree (microbiology).
Juha-Matti is actively involved in various professional associations. He is a substitute council member of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI), as well as a member of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) and the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys (SPAY).

Joni started his work at Laine IP in March 2023. He works as a European patent attorney in the ICT & Mechanics team, specializing especially in ICT inventions.
Before joining Laine IP, Joni worked as a patent attorney in another IPR firm for over six years. During this time, he qualified as both a Finnish patent attorney and a European patent attorney. The prestigious Managing IP publication awarded Joni with the MIP Rising Star recognition in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Before transitioning to patenting, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University, studying the propagation of radio waves in various urban indoor and outdoor environments to support the development of 5G systems.
Joni has graduated from Aalto University and holds a Master of Science (Tech) degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, majoring in radio engineering and minoring in electromagnetics in 2011. Furthermore, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of radio engineering at Aalto University in 2015. His doctoral dissertation concerned artificial electromagnetic composite materials (so-called metamaterials) and their utilization in radio engineering applications (e.g. in antennas, cloaking devices and microwave lenses).
Joni has extensive experience in protecting various ICT/electrical engineering-related inventions both in Finland and abroad (e.g. in Europe, the USA and China). The inventions that he has worked on have related, for example, to ICT, software, artificial intelligence, optics, radio engineering and electronics. He is especially versed in patenting of computer-implemented inventions. In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Joni has experience in conducting various novelty, freedom-to-operate and patent landscape searches for clients as well as in competitor monitoring.

Terhi started in Laine IP’s ICT & mechanics team in February 2021. Terhi is responsible for preparing and processing patent applications, defending and challenging patents, IPR research and investigations related to inventions, patents and their utilisation.
Terhi holds a MSc in Physics.
Terhi is an experienced European Patent Attorney. Before Laine, she worked in another patent office and in the mobile phone industry, e.g. as a team leader and Senior IPR Specialist. Terhi knows the ropes to processing and protecting inventions, risk management and patent defense, as well as analysis to support negotiations.
Terhi is a member in PIRY, STY and epi.
Tiia-Riikka joined Laine IP in March 2021. She works in the chemistry team focusing on inventions in the fields of biotechnology and medicine. In addition, Tiia-Riikka helps our clients with database searches.
Before joining Laine IP, Tiia-Riikka worked as a researcher at the Max Planck institute in Germany and at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center in Denmark. Tiia-Riikka’s research career has focused on protein chemistry and she has worked for example with biosynthesis of antibiotics, use of antibodies and modification of natural products.
Tiia-Riikka holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Helsinki and a doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Kaisa joined Laine IP on June 1st, 2020, and she works as patent attorney in the chemistry team. Her services include patent drafting, prosecutions, oppositions, appeals, European patents and education of patent attorneys. Kaisa offers general education for both experienced patent attorneys and newcomers, and training for European qualifying exam (EQE) – especially for the law-oriented paper M4. She is also an author and the editor in the team updating the Visser’s Annotated European Patent Convention.
Kaisa has a MSc degree in material engineering and she has also studied chemistry at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. She has passed the course epi/CEIPI ”Patent Litigation in Europe” (2006-2007) as well as its update module on UPC (2014).
Kaisa passed the European Qualifying Examination of the European Patent Office in 2003 and since 1998 she has worked in demanding patent attorney work in patent agencies and for periods of time in industry.
She is also a member of Finnish Association for Corporate Patent Agents (PI) and the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights (STY).
